Monitoring Systems Engineer



Our client is searching for a Monitoring Systems Engineer to monitor and report on all software and hardware components throughout the company’s product development and production environments, providing detailed alerts, monitors and visualizations of nodes and their dependencies. The view of this role is to provide statistics and performance indication with the aim of achieving high availability and uptime, trending and identifying bottlenecks and points of concern.



The Monitor Engineer will be responsible for the design and implementation of a reliable monitoring infrastructure covering all aspects of software and hardware components across all data centres and environments. The role will support production and environments staff.



The Monitor Engineer will be required to carry out the design and implementation of detailed monitoring solutions of all IT Services, tailored to meet internal and external Slaps, as well as manage the acceptance testing and the hand over into various environments and to various teams of staff. The Monitor Engineer will have sound knowledge on JEE and .NET frameworks, operating systems and network infrastructure, and be able to work with internal customers, developers and environmental teams to ensure that IT Services are monitored to efficiently and effectively.



Responsibilities:



· Ownership over existing legacy monitoring systems (Cacti, SiteScope, Spotlight, OpenMNS), monitoring new IT Services as they are introduced and improving legacy monitoring

· The design, development and implementation of a global monitoring platform, across all environments from development to production.

· Scripting for kill switches, standard maintenance and supporting software transitions.

· Regularly review and indicate performance, bottleneck and application issues in all environments, and manage their resolution as projects and requirements.

· Collaboration with development and operational staff to ensure accurate and useful monitoring and statistics are in place, and to IT Service SLAs and deadlines.

· Collaboration with performance staff to ensure every metric requested is monitored and across all environments.

Requirements:



· Prior experience writing production monitors and reporting, such as OpenMNS, Cacti, SiteScope, Spotlight.

· Proficiency in scripting (bash, python, php, etc.) a base requirement

· Minimum 3 years experience in developing and supporting J2EE solutions on UNIX/Linux platforms.

· Minimum 3 years experience in developing and supporting .net solutions on Windows platforms

· Knowledge of tool selection methodologies to justify monitoring frameworks and enterprise software.

· Knowledge of Selenium and other automated test frameworks a huge benefit.

· Deep understanding of HTTP, SNMP, and Unix level components and how to monitor their health and efficiency.

· Sound knowledge of Core Java/JEE required

· Exposure to architectural concepts such as SOA, REST, etc. required.

· Knowledge of JEE concepts and technologies (JMS, JMX, Servlets, ESBs, etc.)

· Knowledge of standard industry web servers (Apache, IIS, lighthttpd, nginx, etc.), java containers (JBoss, Weblogic, tomcat, etc.), and messaging/transport systems (MULE, MQ, etc.)

· Knowledge of database monitoring techniques and common problems (DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Informix, Postgres)

· Experience with VMware/ESX and physical hardware a benefit (Cisco, Exchange, VMware, BES, Checkpoint/Cisco ASA Firewall, etc.)
